The Phoenix Bach Choir welcomes the Kansas City Chorale for their annual “Two Choirs” concert, May 3-4, 2008. Led by Artistic Director Charles Bruffy, the concerts feature selections from their Grammy® winning album, Grechaninov’s “Passion Week.”
The first half of the concerts includes one world premiere and five Arizona premieres of new music by composers Terry Schlenker and Ola Gjeilo. Charles Bruffy leads the two choirs in American composer Terry Schlenker’s Timor et tremor and the world premiere of Laudate Dominum along with three pieces by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo including Unicornis Captivatur, Ubi caritas, and Prelude. The first half also includes Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music” with text by William Shakespeare from his play Merchant of Venice. Originally scored for 16 vocalists and full orchestra, this arrangement features full choir with solo violin and piano and 16 vocal soloists drawn from the two choirs. Two Arizona State University professors are featured as soloists – Katie McLin on violin and Andrew Campbell on piano.
The concerts close with music from their Grammy® winning album, Grechaninov’s “Passion Week.” The Phoenix Bach Choir recently celebrated a Grammy® win for their joint recording with the Kansas City Chorale of Alexander Grechaninov’s “Passion Week” on the Chandos record label. “Passion Week” won a Grammy® for ‘Best Engineered Album, Classical’ and was also nominated for ‘Best Choral Performance,’ ‘Best Surround Sound Album,’ and ‘Best Classical Album of the Year.’ Sung in Church Slavonic, BBC Music Magazine selected “Passion Week” as the Choral CD of the month in May 2007. All Phoenix Bach Choir CDs are available for purchase at www.bachchoir.org.
